THE SNOW IS STILL BLUE, THE MOON IS TOO
an exhibition of winter-themed paintings
by MENDELSON JOE

Majesty Meets RavensExhibition opens November 30, 2016 and runs to April 30, 2017.

Many folk are singing the Blues these days and nights. The advent of sociopath Donald Trump as America’s next president sickens me.
Despite this angst I live, I still walk the woods, embrace the moon, follow tracks in the snow. The beauty helps to soothe this troubled soul. I record my vision with acrylic pigment as I have done for almost forty-two years. Art is the healer.
It’s pure coincidence that the night sky makes snow blue. At age 72.3, one could say this Joe has the Blues. Have a look. Rebuke the haters. Silence only serves the scapegoaters.

I MISS WINTER
an exhibition of paintings by MENDELSON JOE

Majesty Meets RavensExhibition opens May 15, 2016 and runs until December 15, 2016.

Some people think I’m crazy when I tell them – I love winter. I’m lucky – I always rejoiced shovelling snow. Why? Snow is pure beauty. But, I’ve also learned to tolerate seasonal change. When buds burst there’ll be broccoli hills to savour. My eyes love broccoli. Little trees. As early as August, sometimes July, one or two of those little trees signal autumn. They spout crimson. I can’t help it. I get excited by nature’s inevitability. Mother Nature is in charge. My eyes love the big Mummy.

JOE'S NEIGHBOURS
Mendelson Joe's sixth book, published by ECW Press
of Toronto is now available in bookstores.

Mendelson Joe's Neighbours A series of energetic and vivid portraits that capture the character
and integrity of rural life.

Outsider artist Mendelson Joe is a painter, activist, musician, and renowned “self-taughter.” But to the people living in the sparsely populated region west of Algonquin Park, he is also a neighbour. With his latest book, Joe commemorates his neighbours in a series of portraits whose subjects range from Canadian musical icon Hawksley Workman to the man who installed Joe’s woodstove.

In Joe’s Neighbours, we get a glimpse into the lives of people who have strayed from the urban grid, and in Joe, we meet a “pathological painter” who is engaged with his community. Viewed through Joe’s idiosyncratic lens, rural Canadian life comes alive, and we meet a hub of artists, activists, and offbeat characters who truly embody Joe’s vision of neighbourliness.

JOE LOVES WINTER
an exhibition of paintings by MENDELSON JOE

Mendelson Joe's March MeltExhibition opens December 15, 2015 and runs until May 15, 2016.

Veteran Outsider artist Mendelson Joe loves winter, especially the outdoors. He is known for his letter-writing; witness Joe’s love-letters in acrylic on canvas. Moon lit forests, blue snow horizons, almost fairyland but never saccharine. Even in February Joe says: “everyday is Thanksgiving. Savour this life, this beauty, this peace! Rejoice, a Canada free of Stephen Harper”.

October Hill

Exhibition opens May 1, 2015 and runs to November 1, 2015

Artist’s Statement:
Being a professional troubadour from age nineteen, I chronicled the adventure in song. I used to write my songs almost anywhere but, especially on Lake Opeongo in Algonquin Park. When I fell into painting in 1975, it was natural to document life where the songs bloomed. When I dared to portray humans, face to face, my world literally, took off like flight. Forty years later, I’ve amassed many hundreds of faces and places. Karen Robinson, my trusted friend and professional advocate will show you.

Glowing Greenery

Exhibition opens May 3, 2014 and runs to November 30, 2014.

After a long old-fashioned winter I welcome the big melt and the emergence of greenery. Like Mother Nature (our true and only mother), I’m programmed to witness buds on the decids* with daffy-down-dillies in tow. Summer means sensual dawns at 4:00 a.m., blackflies, mosquitoes and sandhill cranes!
Behold my green perspectives in paint. Every day is Thanksgiving for this septuagenarian.

Buried Treasure

Exhibition opens May 3, 2014 and runs to November 30, 2014.

January 2014.
Dear Blues-Lovers: Back in the 1980’s I made several recordings, two of which were commercially released. Both these gems received next to no airplay. Since I own the monsters, I thought I’d amalgamate my favourite tracks, inspired performances, raunchy truth-telling music – and, re-release this batch before I’m cremated crispy. I’ve long-lived as if today’s my last ergo those who do they will, and those who don’t they won’t. I am truly old and cold this January day. Behold Buried Treasure.

Out of the Cage - Mendelson Joe
an exhibition of paintings by MENDELSON JOE
at The Bartlett Gallery, Alton Mill Arts Centre

Hopper

Hopper

March 26 - April 19, 2014
Reception: Sunday, March 30, 2014; 2pm-4pm

Rick Mercer once said, “When Mendelson Joe calls, you answer.” At 3pm on Sunday, March 30, the “famous recluse” will literally call in, via video conference, to The Bartlett Gallery during the opening of a new exhibition of his paintings, Out of the Cage. Joe fans will recognize this as a rare, not to be missed coming “out of the cage” by a man who left Toronto for the woods nearly 15 years ago.

Joe has been called “the quintessential Canadian outsider artist,” and he is famous for portraits that make pointed social commentary, mocking his political foes and revering his friends.

Out of the Cage will showcase a softer side of Mendelson Joe, and the northern Ontario landscape that has long been an antidote to his anger. In the north, Joe finds his hope; this is the stuff—the rocks, water and trees—that balm his soul. Of his landscape painting he writes: “Come and witness my heavens.” From March 26 to April 20, The Bartlett Gallery at the Alton Mill Arts Centre invites you to do just that.

"Hoper"
an exhibition of paintings by MENDELSON JOE

The Toque

Exhibition opens May 4, 2013 and runs to November 23, 2013

Back in 1990 I penned a song titled WOMEN ARE THE ONLY HOPE*. Though it was obvious to me as far back as the early 1970’s, the imbalance that exists (I’m speaking of the overwhelming disparity between genders) confirms that the dominance of men, has kept us at war for God and greed with the female half of humanity rendered mostly mute.
Hope is all I’ve got for this much-ravaged planet, the true mother of all life to which many of us refer to as Mother Earth or Mother Nature. So, the spine of my inspiration that keeps me vital to create is hope. A primary component of my hopeful paintings is a by-product of hope – that being the healing gift of beauty. Behold the work of this Joe hoper.

Following three collections of portraiture (Working Women, 2004; Joe’s Toronto, 2005; and Joe’s Politicians, 2008), Joe’s Ontario offers a new perspective from Mendelson Joe: stunning landscapes of his home province painted in acrylic over two decades, between 1990 and 2011.

For Mendelson Joe, these paintings express “the beautiful ride of human appreciation of mostly landscapes and trees and lakes.”

Women are the Only Hope

Artist Statement

I write mid-summer 2011. At sixty-seven I've been very lucky - I haven't lost my marbles. Most of my childhood theories have proven true. My point? Women are the only hope. I recorded this batch of self-penned, self-produced songs back in '91. The musicians all played in exchange for "Joe" art (paintings of my creation). Herewith follows the list of muses and vocalists.
Ben Mink- mandolin, violin & electric guitar

Bob Wiseman - accordion
Scott Irvine - tuba
G.L. Weinrib - bass
Dianne Heatherington - vocals
Anne Hansen - belch
M. Joe - vocals, guitar, drums, keyboards, harmonica, foot and grunts

KAREN ROBINSON GALLERY Proudly Presents:
Joe's Heaven
an exhibition of paintings by MENDELSON JOE

Way Beyond Over my Head

Exhibition opens Saturday May 5, 2012 and runs to April 30, 2013.

Artist's Statement

There are those who would define heaven in scriptural terms. They likely believe they'll dine with Jesus or enjoy wine with seventy virgins. My heaven is not prescribed nor a concept about the hereafter. My heaven is here, now, the present, this moment.

Thus far, I've spent too much time documenting hellish human behaviour in acrylic, in song or with pen. Unlike Jean Paul Sartre who said "hell is other people" – I say: some people are heaven in my book. Check out my portraits (in published books on ECW Press).

JOE'S HEAVEN, curated jointly by Karen Robinson and me, celebrates my versions of heaven after 67.7 years of living. Heaven for this Joe includes sky, water, trees, earth, and other lifeforms. Heaven is a big place. It encompasses beauty, kindness, and goodness. Goodness is always an action! Clean water is heaven.

Though Mother nature can be nasty, especially so these days as she responds to human meddling – she, our one and only mother, Mother Earth, never fails to throw curves. There is no beauty so awesome as the Aurora Borealis or a midnight lightning strike. Her violence is heaven for my eyes and ears. It's all in the beholder say I.

My heaven is quiet. My heaven is sharing that quiet with a friend. My heaven is to rejoice in my loved's character, her kindness, her achievements. My late dear mentor June Callwood told me I had "made a life well-lived". Come and witness my heavens.

Cosy Tosies
an exhibition of paintings by MENDELSON JOE

Exhibition open until April 30, 2012.

As much as Canadians pine for warm weather, this Canadian embraces the drama of seasonal change, especially autumn; cool weather and cosy tosies. Jack Frost. First snow!

As a boy growing up in Maple, Ontario in the late 50's, I enjoyed kitchen socials with welcoming neighbours warmed by woodstove heat and talk of old cars. Back then it was common to walk miles in winter knowing Iíd eventually smell hot coffee (or hot chocolate) and get those cozy tosies.

Press Release Portrait Gallery of Canada Purchases Tomson Highway Portrait by Mendelson Joe
Karen Robinson Gallery is pleased to announce that The Portrait Gallery of Canada has acquired Mendelson Joe's painting of multi-media artist Tomson Highway. Mr. Highway, a celebrated playwright, musician and author of children's books is outspoken on matters pertaining to injustices done to and suffered by First Nations aboriginals. Mendelson Joe, himself a self-taught multi-media artist, rarely paints men except his heroes and/or those males he satirizes as in the case of many of Canada's politicians. The Highway portrait was exhibited exclusively at Karen Robinson Gallery and was recently published in Joe's Toronto, Joe's third book for Toronto publisher ECW Press. Mr. Joe states "I am privileged to be born in Canada, I exist therefore I art."
